We tell you all about this star ingredient in grandmother’s recipes.

What is baking soda?

Baking soda, also called sodium bicarbonate or Vichy salt, is a white, water-soluble powder created from salt and limestone. Three main qualities have different purity criteria: technical, food and pharmaceutical. The most versatile and the one to use in homemade cosmetic recipes is edible baking soda (identified with the FCC code)

Due to the great diversity of its uses, white powder is considered an essential product to have in your cupboards for cooking, cleaning your interior, pampering your garden, and, last but not least, taking care of yourself.

How to use baking soda beautifully?

Baking soda has many qualities, and if there is one that will benefit from it, it is his daily skincare routine! Irritated scalp, skin imperfections, the smell of sweat, dental plaque… The famous white powder seems to have the answer to a large number of beauty problems!

Baking soda to sublimate the skin

To give a little boost to a tired complexion, you can make a minute mask by mixing in a cup a teaspoon of edible sodium bicarbonate, a teaspoon of liquid honey, and a few drops of water. All you have to do is apply the mixture to your face using a synthetic hair foundation brush, then rinse off after a few minutes of application. Since baking soda can be a bit stripping, mixing it with soothing and restorative honey will allow you to enjoy its benefits without attacking the skin.

Always take care of his pretty face; in case of tiny buttons, we can make a local treatment in two seconds flat: soak a cotton swab soaked in water in a small amount of sodium bicarbonate, then tap directly unwanted people with the product. The preparation is left on for ten minutes and then rinsed with clear water. Easy, right? After a few days of this treatment, intruders should no longer be a bad memory!

Baking soda to purify the hair

Once a month, to relieve a scalp suffocated by impurities and excess sebum, you can make a detoxifying mask by mixing 2/3 bicarbonate to 1/3 water. The goal is to obtain a paste that is easy to apply and then massage on the skull for 2 to 3 minutes. Be careful, though: this recipe is not recommended for colored hair, as the white powder tends to release the pigments.

Baking soda, an alternative to deodorant

Like talc, sodium bicarbonate has the particularity of eliminating foul odors. It is, therefore, an exciting alternative to deodorant for the armpits but also the feet! If you want to use it alone, dampen the area, apply a thin layer of powder and then let it dry for a few moments before getting dressed.

Baking soda deodorant recipe: for a more elaborate version (and also gentler on the skin, baking soda can be irritating for sensitive skin), you can make your cream deodorant by mixing 100g of coconut oil, 60g of baking soda, 40g of cornstarch and a few drops of essential oil of clary sage or palmarosa.

Mouthwash recipe with baking soda

A teaspoon of edible baking soda added to half a glass of water makes a very effective mouthwash against bad breath, canker sores, and inflamed gums. This preparation can be used once a day, as part of your daily oral hygiene routine, or as a more systematic treatment to soothe a mild infection.

To remove the spots and tartar that spoil the natural radiance of the smile, it is also possible to sprinkle a minimal amount of baking soda on your toothpaste. Be careful not to abuse this grandmother’s recipe too much so as not to damage the tooth enamel. Once a week, that’s the maximum!
